Travelling to Alford

Alford is located in a picturesque village in Strathdon. The closest airport is Aberdeen Airport, which is approximately 23miles away. Taxi or Car Hire would be the most convenient ways of travel whilst here, however bus travel is also possible, we have outlined some options below.

Explore Slains Castle, taking in the views and history.  It is believed Slains Castle is the inspiration for the setting of the tale in Count Dracula.

Explore Bullars of Buchan, a collapsed sea cave forming an almost circular chasm with spectacular cliff scenery with an array of seabirds to be seen.

Depart Haughton Arms, Alford for The Glenlivet Distillery

Arrive, The Glenlivet Distillery is the oldest legal distillery in Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and has operated almost continuously since. The distillery remained open throughout the Great Depression and its only closure came during World War II.

You will have the chance to embark on a tour of the distillery, with whisky tasting and the chance to visit the gift shop.

Arrive at The Falls of Feugh, Banchory
Take in the magnificent sight of the Salmon fighting their way up the The Falls of Feugh, a famous beauty spot where the River Feugh meets the River Dee.

Depart for the local village of Ballater, members of the Royal family can often be seen around the village when they are in residence.

In Ballater you will have the chance to browse local shops and galleries, visit the Old Royal Station where you can have a spot of lunch and see the waiting room of Queen Victoria and a replica of the Royal Carriage. There are also lovely souvenirs to be found in the Highgrove shop.

Depart for the famous Royal Lochnagar Distillery.

At the foot of the Cairngorm mountains, a mile from Balmoral Castle, this small craft distillery was granted the title Royal Lochnagar in 1848 following a visit, at the invitation of founder John Begg, by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Royal Lochnagar combines malted barley and the pure water of the nearby crystal clear Scarnock springs to create a golden and delicious Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
